Okay, GANG: It’s been a while since I’ve subjected you to my perverted
brand of whimsically sarcastic poetry. So let’s take a glance at some of
the global issues of the day and see how they strike me; starting with
our planet’s single biggest surface feature.
On old Earth the oceans are rising.
How fast they are rising… surprising!
Gotta learn how to share
and move up in the air
cause our usable land is downsizing!
Oh my! That doesn’t sound good. Let me give you a real estate tip,
People. I wouldn’t be investing in coastal or even riverbank housing!
Now, moving on to the ocean environment:
Alaska-sized gyres are swirling.
Marine life inside must be hurling.
As pollution abounds,
the food chain wears down.
It sounds like a script by Rod Serling!
Gee! This is turning into a real downer! Re-focus, sudzy! let’s look at
our near-future prospects beyond Earth.
The first expedition to mars
is a first baby step to the stars.
No doubt we will stumble
and blather and bumble…
and then ride around in mars cars!
Well folks, that’s about as much optimism as this old curmudgeon can
muster up right now. Humans tooling around in martian dunebuggies - -
perhaps even in my lifetime - - does sound good. Of course, that’s
assuming the doomsday clock assessing the probability of nuclear
armageddon doesn’t hit midnight!
